A little about out & aboutOut and About is a community group for people who use Alternative/Augmentative Communication (AAC), including their families, friends, therapists, and mentors. We welcome AAC users of all ages, using any communication device or language system. Groups are facilitated by SLPs and SLPAs in order to create events that utilize ALgS/modeling of AAC, foster social connections and increase receptive and expressive language and communication. Deanna Wagner & Caroline Musselwhite started Out & About through Southwest Human Development over 25 years ago. We have had continued support from TherapyOne and Flagstone, AZ for our Arizona groups. We currently have a West Valley, Central Phoenix and Virtual group that each meet once a month at various locations. We have met at restaurants, parks, libraries, ball games and more! Members of our original group are now AAC mentors that often help lead some of our activities. Some of our activities include scavenger hunts, pranks, making ornaments and cards, reading books and making poems.

Starting your own out & aboutMy friends and I started the Out and About group with our speech language pathologists and it continued to grow! That was over 25 years ago! The Fox Girls were the first group. We all became friends. Then we went to an AAC camp and had fun! We needed to meet up when we got home. So, that is how the first group started. We have had a lot of adventures together! We even won the Mayor’s award for disability issues! Link to watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UhTZ0Ffobk
